In the morning, I moved to the Yamato Museum. The reliability of the staff, who readily answered any questions when asked, was reassuring. Before I knew it, I had circled around 1/10th of the Yamato three times. With limited time, I rushed through the cultural and historical aspects. The stunning recreation of the destruction through CG images of the sinking Yamato was chilling. My companion, Mr. S, dislikes kamikaze attacks and finds the madness in concepts like the use of humans as projectiles in weapons like the Kaiten torpedoes. However, even in weaponry, the craftsmanship displayed in the casting technology of the radial engine’s cooling fins on the Zero fighter’s star-shaped engine is awe-inspiring. In the remaining short time, I hurried through the interior of the modern submarine “Iron Whale”, marveling at the spaciousness of modern submarines JS Akishio, SS-579, which is entirely different from the wartime setting, and I couldn’t help but admire the sophistication in the size of the submarine.
